MEETINGS OF THE CHILE - ARGENTINA JOINT BOUNDARY COMMISSION
Last week, three meetings of the Chilean Argentine Joint Boundary Commission took place. This is a technical body for the demarcation of the common boundary, which was created in 1941 and has been operating since then. On this occasion, the meetings took place between December 9 and 12.
The Chilean Delegation included the participation of the President of the Chilean Boundary Commission, the Director of Boundaries, lawyer Mr. Samy Hawa Arellano, the Delegates, Mr. Juan Pablo Benavides Monsalve and Mr. Rodrigo Muñoz Guerrero, the Secretary of the Commission, Mrs. Marta Mateluna Ríos, and the Second Secretary of the Foreign Service, Mr. Cristian Davis.
The Argentine Delegation, for its part, was attended by the President of the Commission, Minister Mr. Gustavo Bobrik, the Delegates, Mr. Federico Arpe and Mr. Gastón Javier Berlín, the Cartography graduate Ms. Macarena Illana López, and the Land Surveyor Mr. Juan Cruz Borrego.
The meetings on this occasion had the exceptional participation on the part of Argentina, of the Secretary of Foreign Affairs Mr. Eduardo Miguel Bustamante, and the Director of South America of the Trans-Andean Foreign Ministry, Ms. Natalia Soledad Gunski. Meanwhile, for Chile, the Ambassador of Chile in Argentina, Mr. José Antonio Viera-Gallo, attended.
The details of the activities initially included a Meeting of the Subcommittee of Delegates on December 9, where the respective cabinet work carried out during 2024 was verified and the results of both commissions were compared.
On December 10, an Extraordinary Meeting of the Joint Boundary Commission was held, where the field work carried out during the year 2024 regarding section I (Tierra del Fuego area) was addressed, and the draft Work Plan for the 2024/2025 season was also prepared.
On December 11 and 12, extraordinary and special meetings were held, associated with the Treaty on Mining Integration and Complementation between Chile and Argentina, in order to resolve queries made by the respective secretariats of said Treaty.
At the end of the sessions, the Presidents of both Delegations expressed their satisfaction with the work and the objectives achieved, and stated that this instance will be a good manifestation of progress in the common objectives of the bilateral agenda of both countries.
