Between 6 and 8 December was held in Paris the United Nation – Groundwater Summit organized by UNESCO. The Chilean delegation was led by the Minister of Public Works Juan Carlos García and DIFROL participated with representatives of the Office of Transboundary Water and Environment, Daniela Peña y Macarena Bahamondes.
At the Summit, the challenges for the management of groundwater were analyzed and contributions were established to advance in the Acceleration Framework of the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) No. 6 “Clean water and sanitation” of the United Nations 2030 Agenda. The importance of groundwater for compliance with this SDG was also highlighted.
On the other hand, lessons and challenges about transboundary cooperation for the management of share water resources were addressed, considering the experience of the Water Convention, and Latin American and African countries.
Within the framework of outreach activities, the exhibition of Chilean watercolors “Glaciers, the gaze of water” was inaugurated. This exhibition was organized by the permanent delegation of Chile at UNESCO.
It should be noted that the Groundwater Summit is a preparatory event for the World Water Conference organized by the United Nations, to be held in New York in March 2023.
