XXIX Meeting of the “Integración Austral” Committee
The XXIX Meeting of the “Integración Austral” Committee took place in the city of Punta Arenas, on May 28 and 29, 2024, and was chaired by the National Director of State Borders and Boundaries, Mr. Carlos Dettleff Beros, and co-chaired by Minister Santiago Villalba Díaz, Director of Limits and Borders (DILYF) of the Argentine Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The meeting was attended by authorities from Chile and Argentina, including Jorge Flies Añón, Regional Governor of Magallanes and Chilean Antarctica; Claudio Orlando Vidal, Governor of the Province of Santa Cruz; Rodrigo Araya Morales, Regional Presidential Delegate of Aysén; Andrés Dachary, Secretary for the Malvinas Islands, Antarctica, the South Atlantic and International Affairs of the Province of Tierra del Fuego, Antarctica and South Atlantic Islands; and José Ruiz Pivcevic, Regional Presidential Delegate of Magallanes and Chilean Antarctica.
The National Director of State Borders and Boundaries referred to the commitment between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of both countries to improve connectivity in the macrozone. He pointed out that before the end of the current year, the integrated control system in the Integración Austral axis should be in operation, which will allow progress in other measures of border facilitation, and requested the collaboration of the Province of Tierra del Fuego to end the isolation of the population of Isla Navarino, who cannot access Ushuaia due to the high cost of pilotage. Finally, he called for the achievement of objectives for the benefit of the communities in the area.
