The Continental Shelf Project launches a dissemination site on DIFROL’s website
On the occasion of the World Maritime Day, the National Department of State Borders and Boundaries has published on its website an interactive platform that innovatively showcases the scope and major milestones achieved in the over fifteen years of constant work of the Continental Shelf Project. The purpose of this project is to establish the outer limits of Chile’s continental shelf beyond 200 nautical miles.
This interactive platform provides didactic illustrations of how the outer limit of the continental shelf is established through the application of Article 76 of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). It also places special emphasis on the submissions made by professionals from this National Department to the United Nations Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf, regarding the Eastern Region of Easter Island Province and the Western Region of the Chilean Antarctic Territory.
This project has posed a great technological and scientific challenge for Chile, which has involved carrying out a large number of oceanographic, geophysical, and geological investigations in remote areas of the ocean, as well as close collaboration between this National Department and various public institutions and academia.
